1. Life gets better with age. OR 2. Everything goes downhill after the age of 35. Which one will be your truth?? Yesterday, I rode in my third New York City 5 Borough Bike Tour. Once again, it was an amazing, challenging, inspiring, and fun filled day. Amazing because it's incredible to ride the streets and bridges in all of our boroughs car and pedestrian free - Challenging because it's 40 miles of hills, potholes, tights squeezes, sharp turns, and cold wind - Inspiring because along the journey I saw children, old folks, bicycles built for two, unicycles, a woman with only one working leg, a soldier, and so many other people coming together for a day of fun and challenging fitness - And of course fun, because I rode with incredible friends that I have personally witnessed grow and change right along with me. Back in 2007, I was scared of challenging myself and afraid of what others thought of me. At that time, my husband owned a bike and was known to ride around a bit. A handful of times, I recall taking his bike for a short ride over the Pulaski Bridge and being so weak and tired from the mini climb over this mini bridge. Maybe a year later, my husband gave me my very own Schwinn as a gift. For at lease two years, I rode this bike mostly across that mini bridge only to lock it up outside the 7 train. It seems silly now... but it was me. Eventually, I rode to Coney Island on that heavy bike and it was like the greatest accomplishment I'd ever had. After another year, I watched my husband seriously fall in love with cycling so I decided to face my fear, get a "fancier" bike and join him on some harder rides. Little by little, with his tough love, encouragement and support we began to cover some serious mileage... For a long time, it was just the two of us. But somehow along the way, we have inspired and recruited several friends to take on the sport with us. Now, with more people involved it's become more like a team effort as we conquer goals, watch each other overcome fears, and witness some serious personal growth. That's what life is about, right??? When you set your mind to something, face your fear, surround yourself with truly supportive people and train your body, NOTHING can stop you... unless YOU let it. I'm so proud of myself for letting my guard down, facing my own fears, and allowing myself to actually enjoy pushing forward. You just gotta do it! My focus now turns toward The Ride To Montauk that takes place in less than one month - 150 miles! Don't let anyone tell you life slows down after the age of 35. It doesn't have to be your truth. |
